Fall leaves and baker's hats

“I’m so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers. It would be terrible if we just skipped from September to November, wouldn’t it?” -Anne of Green Gables by L. M. Montgomery

Twice last week, the girls and I drove across the mountain to Charlottesville drop off and pick up Ryan at the airport. Our drive took us through the Shenandoah National Park, and the leaves were so beautiful that we had to stop and get some photos!

Even though Ryan was gone only a few days, we missed him greatly, of course. At one point, I heard our toddler, Em, comforting our golden retriever: “I know, Obi. You miss Daddy. Big airplane. It’s okay.” I think she may have also been trying to speak reassuring words to herself.

Recently, Em put a tiny doll hat on her head and said, “I am a baker.” Instantly, I envisioned a little white baker’s hat on her head, and asked if she wanted me to make her one. A few day’s later, I took measurements and found some scrap fabric that I had on hand. The first hat I made was too small because I didn’t allow enough ease for the thickness of the batting.

I made the next hat that I had already cut out for El, and although Em could wear it, too, it was a little too big. So I made yet another one for Em. The girls had so much fun wearing their baker’s hats this weekend: while playing with playdough, learning to play chess with Daddy, and while pretending to be a housekeeper (see pictures below).

The first hat that I made will be gifted to a niece for Christmas so it wasn’t a wasted effort. I will also be making aprons to go with the baker’s hats in the future. Would you like to try this baker’s hat to give as a Christmas gift? If so, stay tuned, I will be posting the tutorial in the near future. If you need a last-minute costume, please drop a comment below or send me a message, and I can send you the instructions directly.
