Our Time at Chapman Knoll

When Ryan and I realized that our original plans for the weekend were out of the question, we discussed what to do. I remembered that a co-member of the Mustard Seed Mentoring group of which I am a part owns a bed and breakfast near the Blue Ridge Mountains at Woolwine, VA. And so I submitted a reservation request for Friday night. In the request, I asked whether Kim could provide a gluten free breakfast. She responded later that night that typically she provides a full breakfast and would normally be able to accommodate my dietary restrictions; however, her farmhouse kitchen is currently undergoing renovation. She offered to stock the kitchen so that I could make breakfast on our own. The reality was that I didn’t want to cook on our little getaway…so she offered to provide some gluten free items that wouldn’t require cooking. And as you will see later in the post, what she provided was perfect!

After meeting Rodger and Kim and their Border Collie named Pig, we settled into the “Yellow Bird Nest” at Chapman Knoll. One of the things we noticed upon arrival was the collection of books. As Ryan and I both enjoy reading, it made us feel right at home to see so many books—even though we had brought our own reading materials.

We enjoyed the cosy warmth of the gas logs and sipped hot tea made with loose leaf tea that Kim provided. Ryan read and studied, and I designed a quilt.

We then settled into the antique bed under the comfortable and warm duvet, which I appreciated greatly during the chilly night.

We awoke to this beautiful sunrise over the Blue Ridge Mountains. Again, the peace and tranquility were soothing, calming, and refreshing.

I enjoy a cup of coffee first thing every morning, and that morning was no different. The evening before, Kim showed me how to use the percolator. She had provided a locally-roasted coffee which made a satisfying cup to enjoy as I read and relaxed. Although I typically drink my coffee black, I was pleased by the brand of half-and-half that she had stocked in the refrigerator: Organic Valley, the co-op that my younger brother’s organic dairy supplies with milk.

The breakfast items that she prepped for us were exactly what I wanted—nutritious, delicious, and convenient! She had stocked the refrigerator with fresh fruits and goat cheese, hard-boiled eggs that she gathered from hens on the farm, yogurts, and apple butter, and peanut butter. On the counter, she had placed sourdough gluten free bread and crackers, bananas, avocados, and a tomato. She had even purchased some gluten free pasta for us in case we needed to eat dinner there. (I didn’t end up making it because we had enough food left from eating a late lunch at the Chateau Morrisette restaurant earlier in the day). However, I greatly appreciated her thoughtfulness!

I savored every bite of this colorful, delectable breakfast!

When it was finally time to get ready to leave, I headed to shower. The shower curtain was my favorite fabric pattern—toile! The Beekman 1802 toiletries provided in the shower provided a refreshing, gentle, not overwhelming, fragrance.

We weren’t planning to stay there another night, but I was loathe to leave this cozy nest.

The living room had a sofa and two arm chairs and was cheerily decorated in soft yellows with accent colors. The beadboard wainscoting was present throughout the cottage adding nice detail.

The second bedroom has two twin beds, which would be great if we make this a family destination.

Before leaving, we chatted with our new friends, the hosts Rodger and Kim.

A hen came over to meet us.

And the dog named Pig showed us one of her antics of proudly running through a drain tube.

We finally pulled ourselves away from Chapman Knoll, already wishing to return at some point in the future…

In the next blog post, I will be telling you about the rest of our trip. And here is a spoiler alert: we wished we had stayed at Chapman Knoll for another night. It was definitely the best part of our trip!
