Making a Crazy Quilt Square-Part 3 (with embroidery tutorial video)
This post is part 3 of a series on how I am making a crazy quilt pillow cover from men’s ties that were given to me to use in sewing projects. If you haven’t already read part 1 and part 2, you can click on these links:

As I shared on Monday, I had finished sewing the ties to the underlying piece of fabric. I decided to provide more stability to the front of the pillow cover by stitching it to a batting known as ByAnnie’s Soft and Stable. This is my favorite product to use to make totes, and I have many more projects that I plan to make with it…
Before I trimmed my square to the size that I wanted it to be, I cut a piece of the batting 20” x 20”.
Note: You want to make sure that you always cut the batting larger than the size you want it to be when you are finished quilting in case the quilting draws the batting in or in case the fabric shifts slightly during stitching. In this case my finished pillow cover will be 18” x 18”.
Before I started stitching, I pressed the pillow cover to make it as smooth as possible and fastened it to the Soft and Stable with Wonder Clips.
Then, using my walking foot, I stitched “in the ditch” on the existing seams.
When I was finished quilting, I trimmed the piece to make it square and removed 1/2” from all sides. Because I was planning to serge the edges, I wanted to allow enough for additional trimming on the serger.
And here you can see the serged edges. The pillow cover now measures a little more than 18 1/2” inches square. The next step is to begin the embroidery on the seams. I have created a tutorial video so that you can learn how to do this stitch as well. Please let me know if you have any questions about how to create the stitch!
I had to stop here to participate in our family bedtime routine, but I hope to complete the stitching over the weekend and show it to you on Monday.
What type of fabric do you think I should use for the back of the pillow cover?
To see what I decided to use, go to the final post on this project: Part 4.
