Finding Organic Cotton Fabric

Because I have been busy sewing fabric face masks and linen lavender eye pillows for the past few weeks, I don’t have any new sewing projects to share with you today, but I do want to let you know about a source for organic fabrics and notions…and even more exciting is that they are now offering DIY Face Mask Kits for sale! Check out their website here to find all of the organic fabrics and other supplies that they offer: Organic Cotton Plus.

And now on to projects that I have made in the past using fabric from Organic Cotton Plus…

Several years ago, after the birth of my second daughter, I had an idea for a product that I wanted to make: a nursing scarf that was absorbent enough to also use as a burp cloth. And so, I went on a search to find an organic fabric that would be suitable for my idea. And I found it! An organic cotton French terry cloth was perfect! I can’t believe that baby in the photo (taken by my husband) is almost three years old now!

The next idea came to me one day after much frustration because my kitchen hand towels kept falling on the floor—a zippered hand towel that would loop over the oven or refrigerator door like an old-fashioned roller towel. And so I ordered a heavier-weight organic cotton terry cloth and an organic cotton/hemp blend of floral fabric to use around the edges of the towel because of the durability of hemp fabric. I loved being able to make a meal with a hand towel that stayed in place and did not get completely saturated from hand-washing during the process! So many of the hand towels that I have used in my life had to be replaced several times during a meal prep because they weren’t absorbent enough! This towel was great! Unfortunately, at my new home, I don’t have a place to hang a towel like this one yet—at least not until we replace the dishwasher. ;-)

Last fall, a friend sent me a link to an organic cotton produce storage bag and asked if I could make one like it! I responded that I absolutely could—I even had the perfect fabric on hand! The organic French terry cloth that I had purchased a large quantity of previously worked perfectly for this purpose. I made a couple of produce bags to try and liked them so much that I made several to give away as Christmas gifts.

And another idea that I have for the heavy weight terry cloth is making aprons. Although I have not tried them in an adult size yet, I made two toddler-size aprons for my daughter and my niece with the fabric. I then made an apron out of ticking fabric for my nephew, because as a twin, I knew that he would want an apron too! My daughter enjoys wearing her apron, and it is wonderfully absorbent to catch anything that she drips or spills on it!
